Clear Aligners vs Braces

In orthodontic consultations at our clinic near Yaksu Station, Seoul, the question I hear most often is the same regardless of age: "Can this be done with clear aligners?" Students at school and working adults with frequent meetings both care about an appliance that does not show. In this article, I explain when clear aligners are possible and where their limits lie, when braces produce a better result, and what each age group should also check.

To give the conclusion first, what decides whether clear aligners are possible is not age but which direction and how far the teeth need to move, and whether you can keep to the daily wear time. For relatively mild alignment problems, a good result can be expected with clear aligners, but when the amount of movement is large or movement in a particular direction is needed, braces may be the more predictable choice. Which case applies to you can be determined only through a detailed examination, so rather than deciding on an appliance before the consultation, it is safer to choose the appliance after seeing the examination results.

Why patients prefer clear aligners

  • They are hard to notice. Because the appliance is transparent, it is difficult to spot at conversation distance. This makes school and work life less of a burden.
  • They are removable. You can eat and brush as usual, so keeping your mouth clean is relatively easy.
  • They can fit around important occasions. For moments that really matter, such as presentations, interviews or events, you can take them out briefly. However, the longer they stay out, the more it can affect the length of treatment.

These advantages are real, but being removable is also a limitation, because the effect of the appliance is proportional to the time it is worn.

When clear aligners are suitable

If the detailed examination shows the following, clear aligners can be considered first.

  • Crooked teeth or gaps between teeth that are relatively mild
  • Some cases of re-treatment, where the front teeth have shifted again after earlier orthodontic treatment
  • When you can keep to the set wear time on your own — wear of 20 hours or more a day is generally recommended

When braces are the better choice

In the following cases, it may be difficult to reach the planned result with clear aligners alone, so we consider braces (fixed appliances) or a combination of both methods.

  • When teeth need to be extracted and the remaining teeth moved a long distance
  • When movement is needed in directions where clear appliances have difficulty applying force, such as uprighting or rotating teeth
  • When the bite (occlusion) itself needs major change
  • When your daily routine makes it hard to keep to the wear time

If you wanted clear aligners and are advised to have braces, it can be disappointing. But this is not a recommendation for a more expensive treatment; it is a suggestion of the method that can reliably move the teeth to the planned position. On the other hand, if you are told that clear aligners can work for any condition, I encourage you to ask for a full explanation of the treatment scope and its limits.

For middle and high school students: wear time is the key

Middle and high school students can also have clear aligner treatment, depending on their condition. However, we also check two things that differ from adults.

  • Wear compliance: Clear aligners are put in and taken out by the patient, so the result depends on the self-discipline to keep the wear time amid school and after-school schedules. If keeping the wear time is likely to be difficult, fixed braces may actually be the more stable choice.
  • Growth and bite: While growth is still ongoing, we check not only the alignment of the teeth but also possible changes in the jaw and bite during the examination, and then decide on the appliance and when to start.

School holidays are a good time to get through the examination and the adjustment period without academic pressure, so if you are thinking about starting, having the examination during the holidays makes scheduling easier.

What to check as well in your 40s to 50s

There is no age limit for orthodontic treatment, but for patients in their 40s to 50s there are items to check besides the alignment of the teeth.

  • Gum condition: When the bone supporting the teeth (gum bone) has weakened, forcing the teeth to move can cause problems, so we may treat the gums first or adjust the range and speed of movement.
  • Existing restorations: Teeth with crowns or bridges need to be taken into account when attaching the appliance and planning movement.
  • Implants: Implants are fixed in the bone and cannot be moved with orthodontic treatment. If you already have an implant, the plan is built around its position, and if an area needs an implant, we often consider placing it after orthodontic treatment.

These conditions are limitations, but they are also where planning orthodontics together with restorations and implants at the same clinic helps put the overall treatment order in place.

What to ask at your consultation

  • What clear aligners can and cannot do for my condition
  • Expected treatment time and visit interval — whether they can fit around school terms or work schedules
  • Whether extraction is needed, and why
  • The plan for wearing a retainer after treatment
  • Whether other treatment, such as gum care, restorations or implants, is needed alongside, and in what order

Before starting orthodontic treatment, we also check whether wisdom teeth affect tooth movement. I have explained the criteria for when wisdom teeth need to be removed in "Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Some Need Removal Even When They Do Not Hurt".

Closing thoughts

Whether to choose clear aligners or braces is not a matter of preference; the answer is closer to what the examination results show. The key is not to decide on the appliance first, but to check the range of tooth movement, the condition of the gums and how well you can keep to the wear time, and then choose the appliance that fits. If you are considering orthodontic treatment that you can continue alongside school or work, I encourage you to first confirm the possible methods and their limits through a detailed examination at Allcare Dental Clinic, near Exit 5 of Yaksu Station. I will explain clearly what options you have and the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

자주 묻는 질문

How do I handle coffee and meals during clear aligner treatment?
As a rule, take the aligners out for meals and for dark-coloured drinks. Eating or drinking with them in can cause staining or warping. However, time spent with the aligners out adds up and can affect the length of treatment, so managing your wear time is important.
Can middle and high school students have clear aligner treatment?
It is possible, depending on their condition. What matters is whether they can keep to the wear time on their own. While growth is still ongoing, it is safer to check changes in the jaw and bite during the examination before choosing an appliance.
Can I straighten just my front teeth with partial orthodontics?
Partial orthodontics can be considered when the front-tooth alignment problem is localised and the bite does not need major change. However, a problem that looks like it involves only the front teeth can sometimes be caused by the overall bite, so a decision needs to be made after an examination.
I am in my 50s. Can I still have orthodontic treatment?
Age itself is not a limit. However, the treatment plan and order can differ depending on the condition of your gums and whether you have existing crowns, bridges or implants, so it is a good idea to have an orthodontic examination and a gum examination together.
Does clear aligner treatment take longer than braces?
It depends on the case. Because it varies with the type and range of tooth movement and how well the wear time is kept, it is hard to say in general which one is faster. After an examination, please ask for a comparison of the expected treatment time for both methods.
